A baby has a special way of adding joy in every single day.However, when baby is crying it is not easy for mother to make them smile again. Infantile colic is such condition. Food items like cow’s milk, eggs, wheat and nuts are known for causing abdominal disturbances in infants.
Physicians and parents use the term colic to describe an infant with excessive crying, irritability, or fussiness.The crying typically starts in first few weeks of life and ends by age of 4-5 months. Excessive crying defined as crying that last at least for 3hrs a day, for 3 days a week, for at least 3 weeks. This is the most distressing periods for parents.
Colic pain is mainly due indigestion, excessive stomach gas formation and abdominal cramps.
Simethicone is an inert in nature with no systemic action. It provides relief in excessive flatulence and gastric discomfort due to excess gastrointestinal gas.
Spasm: sudden involuntary contraction of muscle or a group of muscles accompanied by pain.
Colic: Episodic pain due to spasm of smooth muscles.
Infantile colic: Colic occurring in infants, principally during the first few months after their birth is called infantile colic. It is an attack of severe abdominal pain.
Colic is common among infants in the first three to four months of life that is marked by intense prolonged crying usually during evening hours.
Cause: Up to one third of all babies suffer from colic type symptoms. Usually it is due to the gas trapped in the loops of the intestine leading to spasm to of the intestinal smooth muscles.
Fortunately, infantile colic is a self- limiting condition, which lasts only for the first 3-4 months of life.
Flatulence: An uncomfortable accumulation of air in stomach and intestine.
